This email has been sent to RMTU Ports Delegates.

We’re one step closer to having a Ports’ industry standard to improve how fatigue is managed in the ports. Our Union identified fatigue as a serious health and safety  risk to workers at the 2016 RMTU Ports Forum.  The RMTU committed to lobbying Industry and the Regulators to develop guidelines and standards for improving how the risk of fatigue is managed. We’re making progress!

The draft guidelines attached were written by a working group of representatives from the ports Industry, including the RMTU, MUNZ, the Merchant Services Guild, Maritime NZ , Worksafe,  the Ports Industry Association,   stevedoring companies and Massey University (who provided the expertise on sleep science.)

The guidelines provide information on the employers legislative duties to manage the risk of fatigue, including their duty to engage with workers and their union representatives on how fatigue should be managed, including good roster design.

Also included is a fatigue risk matrix to help assess whether rosters are likely to cause fatigue and information on the scientific principles underpinning good roster design.

I’ve set up two Zoom calls on the 28th October and 2nd November (zoom details below)   to go through what the guidelines could mean for your workplace.

From those zoom sessions we will  write our collective feedback for our submission.
