ACC rights and Return to Work following illness and injury

Our Union will support you to access ACC cover and entitlement if you’ve been injured at work and help you with the return-to-work process.

  1. Return to work following an injury or ill health is the goal of the RMTU, be it returning to the same job or if that’s not possible a different job within the organisation
  2. Workplace based rehabilitation includes the provision of safe and meaningful alternative duties to aid rehabilitation and stay connected to the workplace
  3. Injured or ill workers have the right to ‘a fair go’ getting back to work, medical retirement for incapacitation is a last resort
  4. Return to work duties must be medically appropriate
  5. Stay in touch with people who are injured, check in on them, show you care.
  6. Let members know they can and should have union support throughout the injury management process
  7. ACC claims management can be complex, contact the RMTU if you need advice or support with your ACC claim, or employment issues relating to your return to work

The RMTU has agreements with Transdev Wellington and KiwiRail called the Illness, Injury Management Programme (IIMP) and can be found here.

The IIMP’s are contractual and include the process, roles and responsibilities of the people involved with helping an injured or ill worker return to work.
